Wisley English Rose | Watercolour Rose | Botanical Art

I have been experimenting with watercolours recently. I am not a natural colourist and have to work really hard to make colour work for me. I am currently working on a series of oil paintings and I'm using these small studies of watercolour paintings to help build information for the big oils.

As I was painting this I was thinking how I want my work to be romantic, I want people to look at it and feel romanced. I find watercolours are romantic, they are lovely to use, you never really know which way they are going to bleed and move almost as if they have a life of their own.

I love soft edges of colour, I'm not sure that I really achieved it as well as I wanted to in this picture but I will try and achieve it in my next. I really enjoy it when colours are very subtle and melt into the background.

It works when there is white space left in parts to create an outline effect. I love this look and it works so well in watercolours, I really want to push this further in my next painting. Over all I am happy with the effect that was created with this little piece.
