These two thoroughbred racehorses were both being held by their trainers just before a race at Cheltenham racecourse which is part of The Jockey Club. They were snapped by equestrian photographer David Sinclair. David is an equestrian photographer who covers a lot of the horse racing.
I really loved the pose of the two horses heads together and especially the inquisitive expression on one of the horses face. I sketched out the horses in a light pencil sketch, I slightly exaggerated the length of the necks and made the eyes bigger while trying to keep the flow of their lovely composition. Once I initially sketched the outline of the horses onto a large canvas I then started with the underpainting. I decided to paint this piece on canvas instead of linen. This was so that I would get the lovely canvas texture underneath. I wanted it to be full of texture and very intense. I think that both these horses are quite intense and so it was important to me to make sure that the painting was equally intense as well. I originally wanted the background to be a bright blue like my initial drawing. However, when I got into the painting the color was not working for me. I had to layer up the background about 5-8 times with dark indigos, greens and blue to get a really vibrant deep colour.
This painting took me such a long time to do, not just because of the size but mainly because of the colour, it took me a while to layer up the paint to get the colour deep enough to make an impact.
