Painting A Whippet | Oil On Canvas | Dog Art

Painting A Whippet | Oil On Canvas | Dog Art | Pet Portrait

In my previous post about the whippet pencil study which I drew in homage to Lucian Freud, I said I was going to move the image into an oil painting.

Once I had studied the composition in pencil I sketched the same composition out onto a stretched canvas sized 50 x 60cm. The whippet design is slightly stylised, I have elongated her legs and made her head a little bigger.

I used a limited colour palette which consisted of 3 colours: Titanium White, Yellow Ochre and Raw Sienna and I also used a very small amount of Cadmium Scarlet for the little pink patch on the end of her nose and for the paws.

I did not use any mediums to mix the paint with. I applied the paint thickly with a fine brush and mixed most of the colours on the canvas to get the brindle effect. The grey background was mixed up with the Raw Sienna and the titanium white. I love this painting and I am really happy with the end result.
